MOD!

When it comes to repair averages, one topic that frequently surfaces is the possibility of modifying a Part Number (PN) to another. Contrary to expectations, the answer is usually "No." This post aims to shed light on the reasons behind this common response.

To successfully modify a PN, two crucial elements are required:

1. OEM Service Bulletin (SB):

A modification process typically begins with an OEM SB that outlines the step-by-step procedures for the desired modifications.

Without the necessary OEM SB, attempting a modification becomes impractical.

2. Modification Kit:

In addition to the SB, a modification kit containing all the requisite materials is essential for completing the desired changes.

The absence of either the OEM SB or the modification kit renders the modification unattainable.

Consideration of Mod Plates:

Some OEMs incorporate a modification tag on their units, allowing shops to reference specific modification numbers on a plate without altering the PN.

If a unit possesses a modification plate, it usually indicates that the PN cannot be changed.

Understanding Base PN Differences:

You may be thinking to yourself but the base PN’s are the same the only difference is the dash number… Here is the thing, just because two PN’s have the same base does not mean that they even share the same manual. 285T0022-49 and 285T0022-51 are from different manuals, and even though they essentially perform the same function the way they do so is astronomically different, therefore their piece parts are completely different too.

Manual Compatibility:

Even if two PNs belong to the same manual, the possibility of successful modification remains uncertain.

Differences in dash numbers might exist, not explicitly mentioned in the Illustrated Parts List (IPL).

The IPL lists replaceable piece parts, but not all parts (especially software) are included.

In conclusion, the next time someone inquires about modifying one PN to another, it's crucial to ask: "Based on what SB?" Understanding the necessity of both an OEM SB and a modification kit is key to grasping the challenges associated with PN modifications.
